Wrestler Vinesh Phogat Seeks Reinstatement of Olympic Silver Medal After Weight Disqualification
On August 9, 2024 by editor1 StandardPARIS (AP) — Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has requested the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to award her a shared silver medal after being disqualified from the Paris Olympics final for missing the weight limit.
The CAS confirmed that a Paris-based judge will hear Phogat’s appeal on Friday. A decision is anticipated before the conclusion of the Olympic Games, with the closing ceremony scheduled for Sunday and medals already awarded in her event.
Phogat narrowly missed the weight limit for the 50-kilogram final on Wednesday, which led to her disqualification and loss of the opportunity to earn a medal.
Phogat submitted her appeal on Wednesday, requesting a new weigh-in and permission to compete in the final, but there was insufficient time for a hearing before the event.
Phogat had previously defeated the defending Olympic champion, Yui Susaki of Japan, on Tuesday, and won her quarterfinal and semifinal matches to reach the final.
On Thursday, Phogat announced her retirement from wrestling.
