Steve Martin declines Tim Walz impersonation role on ‘SNL,’ disappointing internet casting enthusiasts.
On August 11, 2024 by editor1 StandardLOS ANGELES (AP) — Steve Martin will not be stepping into the role of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz on “Saturday Night Live,” a prospect that had excited fans online.
After Maya Rudolph’s widely acclaimed portrayal of Kamala Harris on “SNL,” there was speculation about who might play Harris’ new running mate. Given their similar hairstyles and glasses, some fans hoped Martin, a frequent guest on the show, would take on the role.
However, “SNL” producer Lorne Michaels approached Martin about the role for the show’s upcoming 50th season, premiering on September 28, but Martin declined the offer.
“I wanted to say no, and he wanted me to say no,” Martin told The Los Angeles Times. “I said, ‘Lorne, I’m not an impressionist. You need someone who can really nail the guy.’ I was picked because I have gray hair and glasses.”
Martin initially played along with the idea, joking on Threads about Tim Walz wanting to tour with Martin Short. However, he acknowledged that taking on the role would require a long-term commitment to the show, which he felt was best suited for someone with strong impressionist skills.
“It’s an ongoing role,” Martin explained. “It’s not just a one-time thing. They need someone really good at impressions. I’d be struggling with that.”
Rudolph is expected to continue her role as Kamala Harris on the show, with Deadline reporting that she has adjusted her schedule for the comedy series “Loot” to accommodate the role throughout the election season. Rudolph first portrayed Harris on “SNL” in 2019 and has continued with the role since Harris joined the Biden ticket.
